10 New Albums to Stream Today By Scott Russell & Paste Staff Ma| 5:46pm.Though she’s clearly trying to go for a ‘60s Girl Group vibe, even name-dropping “My Boyfriend’s Back,” her collaborator’s whiny-toy drone drags the whole Hollywood shenanigan into the tar pits. The title track, recorded with The Weeknd, is one of the album’s low points. “Everyone says you’re a killer/but I couldn’t stop the way I was feeling….” is like a Jim Thompson novel set to a bar piano drawl and Morricone-esque whistle.īut the vintage vibe she projects doesn’t always work. Lennon asides aside, Del Rey’s Black Dahlia vintage is still on display on tracks like “Cherry” and “White Mustang.” These are soundtracks for film noirs that never existed, right down to the slow-down-the-stairs-footstep percussion. “Isn’t life crazy/now that I’m singing with Sean?” Not really, Lana. With shades of “Across the Universe” in the short, plucky guitars and an out-of-place reference to Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer,” it’s an eye-rolling exercise in self-referential hipster hero worship. “It doesn’t matter if I’m not enough/For the future or the things to come/’Cause I’m young and in love.”īy contrast, the Beatles knock off “Tomorrow Never Came” featuring Sean Ono Lennon, couldn’t be more boring. On “Love” she sings “Look at you kids with your vintage music/Comin’ through satellites while cruisin’” For a quick second, you might think that this is one more judgmental bitch about to tell a guy at a bar that she’s not like “those other girls,” like Katy Perry on “Chained to the Rhythm.” But by the end of the song, you realize she’s grouped herself in with these girls. Instead, their sparse beauty elevates her haunting vocals.ĭel Rey’s real talent is subversion. Accompanied by what sounds like an orchestra played entirely by ghosts, her use of electronic trappings never feel overwhelming or fake. And although we know some song names, a tracklist is not yet available. However, no date has been confirmed, and the record may not be out until June or July. Lust For Life is rumored to be out this Friday, May 26th. More recently, Lana talked about “God Bless America,” a track she wrote about the Women’s Marches earlier this year. She previously mentioned songs like “Yosemite” and “Tomorrow Never Came” (her duet with Sean Lennon). Last week, Lana also shared a political new song called “Coachella – Woodstock In My Mind,” though it’s unclear whether that will be on Lust For Life.īesides frequent collaborator The Weeknd, Lana also recorded duets with Stevie Nicks and Sean Lennon for the upcoming album.
